Police have arrested a 45-year-old man at OR Tambo International Airport after allegedly finding about 2kg of cocaine worth more than R800,000 in his luggage.

The man was intercepted on Monday, 7 September, following intelligence-led information. He was allegedly travelling to Hong Kong, China, when police arrested him at the airport.

A subsequent search of his luggage led to the seizure of drugs suspected to be cocaine, according to SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court this week on drug-related charges.

The arrest comes four days after police arrested another suspected drug mule at the same airport.

On 3 September, a 54-year-old South African man was arrested after suspected cocaine was allegedly found concealed in his luggage. He was also reportedly travelling to Hong Kong. At the time, police said the exact weight and value of the drugs had yet to be determined.

The two arrests follow major cocaine seizures at OR Tambo last month. Police intercepted two separate consignments with a combined estimated street value of more than R200 million, including suspected cocaine found in passenger luggage and cargo.

SAPS said the latest arrests form part of ongoing efforts to disrupt and dismantle international drug-trafficking networks through intelligence-led operations at the country’s ports of entry.
