The diplomatic confrontation between Pretoria and Washington has entered an even more serious phase.
International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola says South Africa will “never agree to surrender” control over its domestic economic policies to the Trump administration.
His comments follow Washington’s announcement of targeted visa restrictions against people it says are responsible for certain South African policies involving land and race.
US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III has warned that those restrictions are only the “first step” and that further measures could follow.
Lamola says South Africa remains willing to engage with Washington but argues that the country’s sovereignty and domestic policymaking cannot be dictated by another government.
South Africa is the United States’ largest trading partner in Africa, with hundreds of American companies operating locally, meaning any sustained deterioration could extend beyond diplomatic rhetoric.
The US has not publicly specified what its next measures will be.
Should South Africa stand firm on sovereignty even if the confrontation begins affecting trade and investment, or should Pretoria seek a compromise?
