SARS has reportedly issued a R14.2 million final tax demand to Medicare24 Tshwane District, a company owned by businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

According to the Sunday Times, the company was given 10 business days to settle the outstanding amount, but had reportedly neither paid the debt nor entered into a payment arrangement with SARS at the time of publication.

The SARS notice reportedly does not explain how the R14.2 million debt accumulated, and SARS has not alleged that it resulted from tax fraud.

Medicare24 is the company at the centre of the controversial SAPS health-risk management tender. The contract was awarded in 2024 and later cancelled in May 2025.

The tender is now at the centre of criminal proceedings involving Matlala and other accused.

Matlala’s Medicare24 matter is expected back before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 25 September 2026.

The R14.2 million SARS demand now adds another layer to the scrutiny surrounding Medicare24.
