Money meant to repair environmental damage at two Mpumalanga mines was unlawfully used to pay mining contractors and other third parties, according to the NPA.
The Johannesburg High Court has convicted Ronica Ragavan, Pushpaveni Ugeshni Govender and three Gupta-linked companies, Optimum Coal Mine, Koornfontein Mines and Tegeta Exploration and Resources, of fraud and money laundering involving R107.5 million in mine rehabilitation funds.
Former Mineral Resources deputy director-general Maleatlana Joel Raphela was acquitted on all counts.
Sentencing proceedings are set for 1 December 2026. Ragavan and Govender remain on bail.
