  • Two fast lanes on the R21 Northbound (km 0.3) at Olifantsfontein are now closed.
  • April 2026 is the estimated completion date for the sinkhole and road rehabilitation.
  • Adherence to signage and flag persons is mandatory to ensure site worker safety.

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has alerted motorists to significant disruptions on the R21 Northbound near Olifantsfontein.

The two fast lanes of Section 2 are currently closed to traffic as engineers begin critical work to stabilise a sinkhole.

These closures are expected to remain in place until 30 April 2026.

The agency noted that the restrictions are essential to facilitate both the complex rehabilitation of the ground and the subsequent road surface repairs required to ensure the route remains viable for heavy traffic.

SANRAL’s Gauteng Provincial Head, Progress Hlahla, urged road users to adjust their schedules and remain vigilant when approaching the construction zone.

He emphasised that following the advanced warnings provided by flag persons is vital for the safety of both commuters and the on-site construction crews.

While the agency apologised for the inevitable delays, Hlahla maintained that the works are a necessary part of SANRAL’s commitment to maintaining the safety and quality of the national road network.

Motorists are encouraged to monitor traffic apps and plan for extra travel time during the morning and afternoon peaks.
