The memorial service of late South African actress Nyandi Nyembe is currently taking place at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg.

The veteran actress passed away at the age of 75, just four days after celebrating her birthday. Her death was confirmed in a joint statement issued by her family and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture on Saturday, 23 August 2025.

With a career spanning more than five decades across theatre, television, and film, Nandi Nyembe was widely described as “the soul of South African storytelling” and a “teacher and guide” in the arts.
