  • National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale led a surprise midnight raid at the Johannesburg Correctional Facility on Tuesday to intercept illegal contraband.
  • The multi-agency operation, supported by the South African Police Service (SAPS), targeted prohibited items to bolster institutional security and order.

The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, spearheaded a high-stakes surprise search operation at the Johannesburg Correctional Facility on Tuesday night.

Executed on 1 April 2026, the raid was specifically designed to uncover hidden contraband and address security vulnerabilities within the prison.

Supported by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the tactical teams targeted illicit goods that compromise the safety and internal order of the institution.

This enforcement measure is part of a series of ongoing interventions aimed at purging correctional centres of illegal items that may pose a threat to both officials and inmates.

The Department of Correctional Services stated that the initiative is central to its mission of strengthening security systems nationwide.

At the time of reporting, the operation remained active, with officials meticulously identifying and removing prohibited items. The search serves as a firm reminder of the department’s commitment to reinforcing compliance with correctional regulations and maintaining high standards of discipline within the Johannesburg facility.
