Two Limpopo traffic officers have been commended after refusing a large bribe during a routine stop-and-check operation. Inspectors Khubana and Nwendamutswu stopped a vehicle in the Masisi area of Vhembe District and found medicine without a required pharmaceutical licence. Inside were four suspects, two Zimbabwean nationals and two South African citizens, who were immediately detained and taken to Malamulele Police Station.
Bribe attempt fails
According to the Limpopo Chronicle, the suspects then offered the officers R100,000 to release them. The inspectors stood firm and applied “zero tolerance” to corruption by adding a bribery charge. All four suspects remain in custody pending further investigation.
MEC praises integrity
Limpopo’s MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Nakedi Kekana, publicly praised the officers’ actions. She told the Limpopo Chronicle their conduct is a “shining example” of loyalty and integrity, choosing the people of Limpopo over personal gain. Kekana warned that transporting medicine without a licence poses a serious health risk to communities and said the officers will be formally recognised for their integrity.
This incident highlights the risks of illegal medicines on the road and the importance of honest public servants. The officers’ decision to reject the R100,000 bribe has been hailed as a victory for the rule of law and the safety of Limpopo residents.
