Despite falling short of the last eight for the first time, Chiefs remain determined to return to African competition and correct their mistakes.
Domestically, the Soweto giants are well-positioned in the Betway Premiership, currently sitting third on the table. They need just three wins from their remaining six matches to all but secure qualification for next season’s Confederation Cup.
Why Kaizer Chiefs eye R66 million
The real incentive lies in the significant financial rewards on offer. The winners of the CAF Confederation Cup earn $4 million (around R66.6 million), a stark contrast to the roughly R6 million Chiefs received for reaching the group stages this season.
With continental qualification within reach, management is expected to prioritise strengthening the squad to compete both in Africa and domestically.
Another crucial call will involve the club’s co-coaches, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze. Since taking over in September, the duo have stabilised the team, but Chiefs still trail behind rivals such as Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
A stronger showing in Africa next season could significantly boost the club’s finances beyond this year’s earnings.
There is also additional motivation on the domestic front. Winning the MTN8 would bring in R10 million, already surpassing what Kaizer Chiefs earned across all competitions this season.
