Floods continue to kill people in Limpopo and Mpumalanga

More than 20 people are feared dead following severe flooding in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has received distressing reports of people drowning after attempting to cross flooded streams and river bridges following persistent rainfall in affected areas.

Limpopo and Mpumalanga have experienced severe weather conditions over the past week, resulting in widespread flooding that has disrupted essential services and claimed lives.

While the exact number of fatalities remains unclear at this stage, more than 20 people are believed to have died as a result of the floods.

Departmental spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala has urged motorists, pedestrians, and all road users to exercise extreme caution, particularly when crossing low-lying bridges and flooded roads.

“We are deeply concerned about the loss of lives reported in Mopani and Vhembe. We urge motorists and pedestrians to refrain from crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges. No destination is worth a human life. Floodwaters are unpredictable and can easily sweep away both people and vehicles,” Taueatsoala said.

Traffic officers and disaster management teams remain on high alert, continuing to monitor road conditions and provide assistance where required.

The department has extended its sincere condolences to families affected by the recent tragic incidents and reiterated its call for vigilance and responsible road use during adverse weather conditions.
