Explosives used in money heists and various crimes have been intercepted at Beitbridge Border Post.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) intercepted a truck carrying explosives worth R1 million at the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The truck was attempting to smuggle these explosives into South Africa.
“The explosives, often used in cash-in-transit robberies and illegal mining, were discovered after alert BMA officers grew suspicious and worked with South African Revenue Service to scan the vehicle using advanced technology. The scan revealed a hidden compartment containing the explosives,” said BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi.
“It’s a good thing that we intercepted them because we are preventing these illegal things from happening,” she said.
The driver tried to flee but was quickly arrested. Further investigations by South African Police Service are underway.
Police are now investigating where the explosives came from and where they were intended to go.
