The South African National Blood Service is celebrating a remarkable milestone – 25 years of saving lives across South Africa.
The organisation says this achievement would not have been possible without the generosity of voluntary blood donors, the dedication of its staff and the trust of the nation.
Over the past 25 years, every unit of blood collected has told a story of compassion, solidarity and shared humanity.
Established in April 2001, SANBS has become a vital part of the country’s healthcare system, serving eight of the nine provinces and helping ensure patients receive life-saving care.
Reflecting on the milestone, SANBS CEO Ravi Reddy described it as a proud and humbling moment for an organisation committed to saving lives.
“It represents not only the strength of our systems and the dedication of our people, but also the extraordinary generosity of South Africans who continue to donate blood and save lives,” he said.
Reddy added that strong partnerships, particularly with the Department of Health, have helped build a resilient and trusted service. He said SANBS remains committed to innovation, excellence and ensuring that every patient in need has access to safe, quality blood.
The milestone also serves as a moment to honour the countless lives saved, the selfless donors, dedicated professionals and partners who have made this journey possible.
It is also a call to action for South Africans to continue supporting blood donation efforts and help sustain a system that protects and saves lives every day.
