Tragedy in Daveyton: Grade 3 learner killed in primary school wall collapse

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has shared his profound sadness following the death of a Grade 3 pupil at Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton.

The tragedy occurred on Thursday, 26 March 2026, when a section of a school wall reportedly collapsed during breaktime, striking a group of children.

Six pupils sustained severe injuries during the incident and were immediately rushed to various medical facilities by emergency services.

Despite the swift response and urgent medical intervention, one young boy tragically succumbed to his injuries while in hospital. The remaining five pupils continue to receive treatment for their wounds.

The Gauteng Department of Education has launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the structural failure.

In the interim, psycho-social support teams have been deployed to the Ekurhuleni school to provide essential counselling and emotional assistance to the bereaved family, traumatised classmates, and staff members.

MEC Chiloane has committed to supporting the school community throughout this devastating period, emphasizing that the department’s priority is both the wellbeing of the survivors and a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
